CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University blasted USAO 15-1 to earn a split in a doubleheader on Saturday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA baseball, dropped the first game of the twin bill 5-4. OCU moved to 18-6, 5-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Stars pounded out 16 hits and quickly took control in game two. Matt Presley ripped a double to right-field to bring home a run in the first inning.
OCU added three runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. After two quick outs in the inning, OCU got singles from Scott Dalrymple and Brian Fisher to place runners at first and second. Kirk Walker followed with his third home run of the season to give the Stars a four-run lead.
OCU pushed across five runs in the sixth inning and added five more runs in the seventh to pull away. Walker, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., led the way for OCU with three hits and three RBIs, while Fisher, a sophomore from Spring, Texas, had two hits and three runs scored. Presley, Terrance Jackson and Mark Purser each had two RBIs in game two.
Mike Richard, a junior from Walla Walla, Wash., pitched six strong innings to move to 4-1 on the season. Richard allowed one run on eight hits and struck out four.
In game one, OCU pushed out to a 1-0 lead through four innings before USAO rallied with four runs in the fifth inning. Walker scored in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from Presley to give OCU the lead.
The Stars scored twice in the sixth inning to cut the USAO lead to 4-3. Dearth Parker hit a double to score a run, and Presley doubled to right-field to bring home Parker.
After USAO scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead, OCU tallied a run in the seventh before its rally was cut short.
Nate Hammons went the distance for USAO, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out eight.
Clint Maune, a junior from Yukon, Okla., gave up four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings to take the loss for OCU.
The Stars will play at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
