OCU defeats No. 25 Northwood 9-0, 18-6

Kirk Walker went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the second game Sunday.

CEDAR HILL, Texas – Oklahoma City University completed an unbeaten opening weekend in baseball with a 9-0, 18-6 doubleheader sweep of Northwood (Texas) on Sunday at Knights Field.

The Stars, ranked third in the NAIA, improved to 4-0, while 25th-ranked Northwood fell to 5-5. Steve Vitale, a senior from East Meadow, N.Y., knocked out two home runs for OCU.

In the first game, Dustin Williams and Zac Coplon combined to twirl a four-hit shutout. Williams, a senior from Norman, Okla., went 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven. Coplon, a junior from Claremore, Okla., fanned four in 2.2 innings.

Vitale went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Matt Presley nailed a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Brian Fisher swatted a two-run blast to left field in the second and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Presley ignited a five-run fifth with his three-run shot to left. Fisher added a run-scoring base hit, and Chad Carman drove in Fisher with a triple to center.

Vitale pounded a three-run homer to spark an eight-run sixth. Garrett Regan hit an RBI double, Nathan Bryan had a run-scoring single and Terrance Jackson nailed a two-run base hit. Mark Purser also reached home on an error.

Jackson brought in five runs and scored twice in support of his own case. Jackson, a junior left-hander from Greenville, Ala., earned the win by going four innings with three strikeouts. Clint Maune and Purser combined to shut out Northwood the final three innings.

Kirk Walker, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Vitale was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in. Bryan, a junior from Andrews, Texas, went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs knocked in.

OCU is scheduled to meet Oklahoma Wesleyan in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium in the season home opener.
