FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University began baseball season by sweeping Texas Wesleyan 6-4 and 18-0 on Saturday at Sycamore Park.
The third-ranked Stars overcame a three-run deficit in the first game on the way to becoming 2-0.
Brian Fisher, a junior from Spring, Texas, put OCU on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a two-run home run down the left-field foul line. Steve Vitale, a senior from East Meadow, N.Y., cut the Stars' deficit to 4-3 by swatting a solo shot over the right-center field fence.
OCU rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh. Dearth Parker drove in a run with base hit up the middle.
After Terrance Jackson and Kirk Walker reached base by getting hit by pitch, Matt Presley nailed a two-run single to left to bring in the winning runs.
Brad Riddle, a senior from Bethany, Okla., made the runs stand with a scoreless bottom of the inning. Riddle worked the final 2.1 innings of the game, striking out two in earning the victory.
Mike Richard, a junior left-hander from Walla Walla, Wash., picked up the win to cap the doubleheader. Richard allowed four hits and four walks in seven innings to turn in the shutout.
OCU jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead in the second game. Vitale had an RBI single to right, and Presley, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., nailed a three-run blast to right. Scott Dalrymple drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Stars increased their lead to 11-0 in the third. Jackson had a three-run homer. Presley and Garrett Regan added RBI doubles, and Nathan Bryan chipped in a run-scoring base hit.
OCU put together five runs in the fourth. Jackson and Regan pounded RBI doubles, and Vitale drove in a run on a single. Matt Purser knocked in a pair of runs on a double to left.
Vitale added a two-run double in the seventh to cap OCU's scoring.
Jackson, Presley and Vitale each drove in four runs. Jackson, a junior from Greenville, Ala., went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Vitale was 3-for-6 and scored twice. Regan, a senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, went 3-for-3, scored three times and drove in two runs. OCU pounded out 16 hits in the second game.
The Stars take on 25th-ranked Northwood (Texas) in a noon doubleheader Sunday in Cedar Hill, Texas.
