OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University salvaged a doubleheader split with Peru State (Neb.), recovering from a 5-3 loss to win the second game 11-7 on Sunday at Pirate Field at Putnam City High School.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA baseball, went to 7-1 on the year. Matt Presley nailed a three-run home run as OCU rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the nightcap.
In the second game, Presley lofted a 1-2 pitch over the right-center fence. Kirk Walker cut the Stars' deficit to 7-5 by pounding an RBI double to right-center earlier in the fifth inning.
Steve Vitale hammered a three-run homer to right to extend OCU's advantage to 11-7 in the sixth.
Nathan Bryan cranked a solo homer, and Walker swatted a two-run blast to put OCU ahead 3-0 in the third.
Walker went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Terrance Jackson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Presley was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in, and Garrett Regan went 2-for-4.
Mark Purser picked up his first win as a Star, working 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Brad Riddle finished off pitching for OCU with a scoreless seventh.
In the first game, Dearth Parker went 2-for-3 and hit a solo homer to right in the fourth. Presley, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., drove in the first run of the game with a first-inning double to right-center. Regan brought in the final OCU run with a groundout in the fifth.
The Stars face Southwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
