Stars hand Mid-America Christian first loss of year

OCU moves to 4-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play

Meghan McMahon grabbed a goal and an assist on Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University women continued unscathed in conference play after notching a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Mid-America Christian on Saturday at Stars Field.

The 23rd-ranked Stars (9-2, 4-0) outshot the Lady Evangels by a 21-1 margin. Melissa Dobie, Mid-America's goalkeeper, had 10 saves in the game, but the Lady Evangel defense wasn't enough to contain OCU's offensive firepower.

“The girls played a very good game, it was a difficult team to play against,” coach Billy Martin said. “Mid-America defends very well, but the girls found a way to win.”

OCU was led by Meghan McMahon, a freshman from Oklahoma City. McMahon had eight shots in the match, three of which were on goal. She also netted her ninth goal and second assist of the season, bringing her points total to 20 on the year thus far.

The scoring began midway through the first half, with Mid-America getting on the board in the 22nd minute. Until this point, the OCU defense and goalkeeper Brittany Tibbs, a senior from Kansas City, Mo., had been on a streak of over 320 minutes without giving up a score.

The Stars struck in the 41st minute to even the match before halftime. Sheridan Horner, a sophomore from Choctaw, Okla., grabbed the goal with an assist from McMahon. Horner has netted scores for OCU in the Stars' last two contests.

In the 60th minute, McMahon got the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal for OCU. Malin Andersson, a senior from Huskvarna, Sweden, got the assist on the goal, her 10th of the year. McMahon had eight shots in the match, three of which were on goal.

OCU next travels to John Brown (Ark.) for a Tuesday afternoon tussle in Siloam Springs, Ark., at 1 p.m.
