BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University held on to a 7-6 win over Southern Nazarene on Tuesday at the Cypert Athletic Complex.
Jason Machado pounded a home run over the left-field wall to provide the difference for the Stars, ranked second in NAIA baseball. OCU moved to 46-7, 22-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
No. 19 Southern Nazarene dropped to 37-11, 19-9 in the SAC. The Stars improved to 9-2 against ranked opponents this year.
OCU built a 6-0 lead through seven innings, but Southern Nazarene responded with five unanswered runs. Matt Powell drove in a ninth-inning run for SNU with a base hit to left, but Brad Riddle struck out Sam Mercado to end the game.
Riddle, a junior from Bethany, Okla., notched his sixth save of the year. David Odquist earned the victory with 6.1 innings of work, striking out six and allowing two runs on three hits. Odquist, a senior left-hander from Midwest City, Okla., improved to 8-1.
Landon Camp had a run-scoring single to put OCU on the board in the first inning. Kirk Walker drove in another run in the fourth with a base hit, then the Stars scored off an error in the fifth.
In the seventh, David Mann had a two-run double, and Brandon Moss put OCU up 6-0 with a base hit to left.
In the bottom of the seventh, Southern Nazarene scored on RBI singles by Alex Rehnstraum and Chase Glaum. Then Rehnstraum cut OCU's lead to 6-5 with a three-run triple in the eighth.
OCU faces Southern Nazarene at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium on senior night.
