OKLAHOMA CITY – Brent Weaver became the first Oklahoma City University hitter to top 30 home runs in a season, increasing his total to 31 with three in a doubleheader split Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars dropped the first game 12-9 before picking up a 13-2 win in the second game. OCU, ranked second in NAIA baseball, moved to 44-7, 21-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Weaver, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., knocked two out of the park in the first game. Weaver had a two-run homer in the third inning and added a two-run blast in the sixth. Weaver tied the game 6-6 with his second homer.
Weaver launched a homer over the left-field net to put OCU on the board in the first inning of the second game. Weaver set OCU's single-season homer record on Thursday with his 28th homer.
The two teams combined to crush 14 homers in the twin bill. Landon Camp, a senior from Edmond, Okla., nailed two homers.
In the first game, Wheeler followed Weaver's first homer of the day with a solo shot of his own in the third. USAO had a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the third.
Brandon Moss had an RBI base hit in the fifth to cut OCU's deficit to 6-4. Moss put the Stars on top 7-6 with an RBI single in the seventh. Sammy Lee added a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh.
Brandt Lierle tied the game 7-7 with a solo homer. Andrew Reyes' pinch-hit, two-run homer put USAO ahead 9-7 in the top of the seventh. Greg Ylda added a three-run shot.
Weaver went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs, and Moss went 2-for-4 with two runs driven in. Lee was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Camp, Jason Machado, David Mann, Steve Vitale and B.J. Wheeler each had two hits.
Dustin Williams took the loss for the Stars to move to 3-1.
In the second game, Lee put OCU up 5-0 with a grand slam to left in the second inning. Camp nailed a three-run homer in the third.
In the fourth, Vitale reached home plate on a wild pitch, and Wheeler doubled in another run. Camp's two-run shot finished off the game in the sixth.
Justin Harper picked up the win, striking out four in six innings. Harper, a junior right-hander from Phoenix, improved to 9-2.
Camp went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, and Wheeler was 2-for-3. Kirk Walker went 2-for-2 and scored twice.
OCU will play Bellevue (Neb.) at 6 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
