CHICKASHA, Okla. – Brent Weaver broke Oklahoma City University's single-season home run record as the Stars hammered six homers in a 20-4 victory over USAO on Thursday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
Weaver, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., turned on an 0-1 fastball and launched a line drive over the scoreboard in left field with two out in the third inning. The Stars, ranked second in NAIA baseball, improved to 43-6, 20-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
With his 28th homer of the year, Weaver pulled away from the tie he had with Rick Nadeau, Nick Klusaw and David Dennis. Nadeau hit 27 homers in 1999, Klusaw tied the record in 2005 and Dennis equaled the mark last year.
“I knew I hit it well enough for it to go out when I made contact,” Weaver said. “It's a huge honor to hold the record because of all the great hitters that have come through this program.”
Weaver's homer put OCU ahead 11-0. The Stars exploded for seven runs in the second inning.
Sammy Lee started off OCU's scoring in the second with a two-run base hit. Steve Vitale and Jason Machado each followed suit with two-run singles, then David Mann had a sacrifice fly.
Machado hit a two-run double in the first to put OCU ahead 2-0.
Landon Camp and Mann smashed back-to-back homers in the fourth as Camp added to the school career homer record he holds. Weaver chipped in a sac fly to up the Stars' lead to 14-0.
Machado swatted a solo shot over the center-field wall in the fifth. Mann drove in a run with a base hit in the inning.
Mann and Lee went back-to-back for homers to touch off a five-run seventh. Kirk Walker scored on Lee's blast. Brandon Moss and Camp brought in runs with singles.
OCU finished with 22 hits. Mann, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Lee, a senior from Ninnekah, Okla., went 3-for-6 and scored three times and drove in four runs.
Machado, a senior from Frisco, Texas, was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs, while Weaver was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two runs driven in. Camp and Walker each had two hits, and Camp and Vitale each had two RBIs.
Ashur Tolliver, a junior left-hander from Sherwood, Ark., picked up the win by working six innings and striking out 10. Tolliver (9-1) allowed three runs on three hits, putting together 3.1 perfect innings. Tristan Bugenis pitched the seventh for the Stars.
