OCU stays away from sweep with 11-6 win over Lubbock Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University avoided the series sweep by beating Lubbock Christian (Texas) 11-6 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.

The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, salvaged a tie for the Sooner Athletic Conference standings, but fifth-ranked Lubbock Christian came away winning the three-game series. OCU is 28-3, 10-2 in the SAC, while Lubbock Christian fell to 26-3, 10-2.

Garrett Parker, a junior right-hander from Duncanville, Texas, held Lubbock Christian hitless through five innings. Jaime Armendariz broke up the no-hitter with a single past the second baseman after Bo Merrell drew a lead-off walk.

Parker improved to 4-0 by working 6.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits. Parker struck out nine. Brad Riddle threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Brent Weaver sparked the Stars offense by crushing a line-drive three-run home run over the left-field fence in the third. Weaver, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., made it two in the game and an NAIA-high 21 on the season in the eighth on solo blast to center.

B.J. Wheeler nailed a two-run homer to left, touching off a six-run sixth. Landon Camp reached home plate on a wild pitch, and Brandon Moss pounded a three-run shot to left for OCU.

David Mann added an RBI double along the left-field foul line in the seventh.

Weaver went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored, while Moss was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Wheeler was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Sammy Lee was 2-for-3. Jason Machado went 2-for-5 for OCU.

Lubbock Christian tallied five runs in the seventh highlighted by Ross Blondin's three-run homer.

Tanner Vickers took the loss and went to 4-3. OCU chased Vickers after he worked five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits.

The Stars take on Northwood (Texas) at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
