PLAINVIEW, Texas – Brent Weaver's home run in the top of the ninth inning provided the winning run in Oklahoma City's come-from-behind 6-5 win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Monday at Wilder Field.
Weaver, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., parked a 1-0 pitch past the left-field wall to lead off the ninth. The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, improved to 25-1, 9-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference and finished a three-game sweep of 17th-ranked Wayland Baptist (22-7, 8-5).
“That's what an all-American does,” OCU coach Denney Crabaugh said. “He got a breaking ball and hit a line drive. It couldn't have come at a better time. We won a tough ballgame, and we have to be able to win one of those. I'm proud of how we battled.”
Down 2-0, OCU rallied with a four-run fourth inning. Brandon Moss, Steve Vitale and Weaver each pounded homers, then Jason Machado drove in another run with a base hit to left.
Wayland Baptist answered with three runs, taking the lead in the seventh on Michael Prell's run-scoring single.
David Mann answered for the Stars with a homer over the right-center gap in the eighth.
“Their pitchers kept our hitters off balance,” Crabaugh said. “We had chances to break the game open, but we didn't get that timely hit.”
Dustin Williams recorded the victory after working 3.1 innings and striking out six. Williams, a junior right-hander from Norman, Okla., moved to 3-0. Garrett Parker chalked up 11 strikeouts in 5.2 innings for OCU.
“We really threw well,” Crabaugh said. “Dustin threw really good ball. We were really solid.”
The Stars face Friends (Kan.) at 1 p.m. and Hastings (Neb.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
