OCU takes two from Wayland Baptist 11-3, 19-3

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University's top-ranked baseball team routed Wayland Baptist (Texas) 11-3, 19-3 on Sunday at Wilder Field.

The Stars moved to 24-1, 8-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Wayland Baptist, ranked 17th in the NAIA, fell to 22-6, 7-4.

In the first game, OCU broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with an eight-run frame. With the bases loaded, Jason Machado got hit by pitch, David Mann drew a walk and Brandon Moss had a sacrifice fly. Mann scored on a wild pitch. Sammy Lee hit an RBI single, then B.J. Wheeler drew a bases-loaded walk. Landon Camp plated two more runs on a base hit to left field.

Mann, Walker and Wheeler each pounded home runs in the contest. Mann, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Camp and Wheeler each drove in two runs.

Ashur Tolliver scattered eight hits in a complete-game effort to improve to 6-0 this year. Tolliver, a junior left-hander from Sherwood, Ark., struck out 12.

In the nightcap, the Stars blew open a 6-4 game by exploding for 13 runs in the final three innings, seven in the sixth and final inning.

Lee nailed a grand slam in the second to start the OCU scoring. Moss brought in a run in the second with an infield hit, and Machado reached home plate on an error.

In the fourth, Wheeler hammered a two-run homer to center, and Mann drove in a run with a base hit. Camp cranked a three-run shot in the fifth.

In the sixth, Mann had a run-scoring single, then Lee had an RBI double and Steve Vitale swatted a two-run triple. Vitale scored on a wild pitch, and Machado walked with the bases loaded. Brian Fisher capped the seven-run sixth with an RBI base hit to right.

Justin Harper, a junior right-hander from Phoenix, earned the victory, striking out six in five innings. Michael Bryant worked the final inning and notched two strikeouts.

OCU looks for the series sweep of Wayland Baptist at 1 p.m. Monday at Wilder Field.
