CEDAR HILL, Texas – Brent Weaver clouted two home runs on the day as Oklahoma City University swept Northwood (Texas) 11-9 and 13-3 on Saturday at Knights Field.
Weaver, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., drove in the go-ahead runs in the first game on a two-run homer in the sixth inning. OCU, who finished third in last year's NAIA World Series, swept its season-opening series to move to 3-0.
In the first game, Kirk Walker went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs, while Weaver and B.J. Wheeler each drove in two runs for the Stars. Sammy Lee went 2-for-4 with a homer for OCU.
Garrett Parker came on in relief and went 2.2 innings and struck out three to pick up the win. Brad Riddle retired Chaney Stout with a runner on third in the seventh to earn a save.
The Stars rallied from a 5-1 second-inning deficit. OCU rallied with six third-inning runs. David Mann drove in a run with a base hit, and Steve Vitale reached home plate on a passed ball. Wheeler added a two-run double, then Walker nailed a two-run homer.
In the second game, Walker went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Lee, Weaver and Jason Machado each brought home two runs.
OCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Weaver swatted a two-run homer, and Machado went deep on a solo blast.
The Stars plated eight runs in the fifth, taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch. Chad Carman and Walker each drove in runs.
Justin Harper went all five innings and struck out nine to pick up the win.
OCU opens its home slate in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday against Missouri Baptist in a rematch of last year's NAIA Mid-South Super Regional.
