OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University blitzed Hastings (Neb.) 22-0, 13-5 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
OCU recorded its fourth shutout of the year and a season-high 22 runs in the first game. The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, ran their record to 17-0.
In the first game, Jason Machado drove in nine runs, hammering two home runs – a three-run shot in the third inning and a grand slam in the fifth. Machado, a senior right fielder from Frisco, Texas, went 3-for-4.
Brent Weaver pounded his 12th homer of the year, a two-run blast that sailed opposite field to right in the first. B.J. Wheeler led off the fourth by launching a solo shot over the right-field fence, and Brandon Moss went deep in the fifth.
OCU scored six runs in the third and the sixth and seven runs in the fifth. Wheeler, a senior second baseman from Abilene, Texas, went 3-for-4 and scored three times, and Sammy Lee also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Landon Camp was 2-for-4 and scored three runs.
David Odquist picked up the win, striking out nine in four innings. Odquist, a senior lefty from Midwest City, Okla., overcame five walks to go to 3-0.
Odquist worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second with two strikeouts, catching A.J. Clark looking to end the threat. Tristan Bugenis and Dustin Williams completed the whitewash.
In the second game, the Stars jumped out to a seven-run lead in the first. Steve Vitale brought in the first run with an RBI double, then Weaver and David Mann each had run-scoring base hits. Chad Carman nailed a bases-loaded double, and Sammy Lee had an RBI double.
OCU exploded for six more runs as Moss had a two-run double, Walker a two-run single and Vitale tripled to drive in a run. Lee scored on a wild pitch.
Michael Bryant got the win by pitching three innings, entering the game in the fourth. Bryant, a senior righty from Sperry, Okla., went to 2-0.
The Stars face Lyon (Ark.) at 10 a.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
