OKLAHOMA CITY – David Mann crushed a solo home run over the right-field fence to touch off a five-run inning in the second game and propel Oklahoma City University to a 17-5, 11-3 doubleheader sweep of Missouri Baptist.
Mann, a junior left fielder from Albuquerque, N.M., turned on the first pitch reliever Elvin Millan threw to tie the game at three runs. Then Brent Weaver got hit by a pitch, and Jason Machado drew a walk each with the bases loaded to give the Stars the go-ahead runs.
OCU improved to 5-0 on the year in the Stars' home opener. Missouri Baptist, ranked 19th in NAIA baseball, lost its opening games of the year. It was a rematch of last year's NAIA Mid-South Super Regional. The Stars won the super regional to advance to the World Series, finishing third.
Weaver added an RBI single, and Landon Camp had a two-run base hit in the eighth for the Stars.
Steve Vitale, a junior from East Meadow, N.J., went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, while Camp drove in three runs. Chad Carman and Kirk Walker each went 2-for-4.
Dustin Williams picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out three. Garrett Parker pitched the first 6.2 innings and struck out nine.
In the first game, OCU exploded for 11 runs in the fifth. Weaver had a bases-loaded, three-run double and scored on Machado's triple. Walker had an RBI single, Carman a run-scoring double and Sammy Lee drove in another run with a base hit. Vitale added a two-run homer to right.
Vitale homered twice in the first game, going 3-for-4 with five runs driven in. Weaver was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two dingers of his own, going back-to-back with Vitale in the second. Walker was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Lee went 4-for-4 and scored four times.
Ashur Tolliver, a junior left-hander from Sherwood, Ark., picked up the win by allowing one run in five innings.
OCU meets York (Neb.) at 10 a.m., then faces Missouri Baptist at 4 p.m. Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
