Stars knock off Panhandle State 75-66

OCU builds largest lead of day with 16 unanswered points between third, fourth quarters

EDMOND, Okla. – Oklahoma City University collected a 75-66 victory over Panhandle State on Saturday at Hamilton Field House. 

Fiona Wilson posted 20 points for her fourth 20-point performance of the season for the Stars. OCU improved to 12-12, 9-10 in Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball. 

Oklahoma City unleashed a 16-0 spree between the third and fourth quarters to push its advantage to its largest of the game. Wilson and Elaine Witt buried back-to-back treys to put OCU ahead 62-41 with 7:52 remaining. Amaya Gordon ignited the run with a jumper at the 1:51 mark of the third period. 

"Tough teams find a way to pull it out, and this afternoon, we toughed it out," OCU coach Kris Seigenthaler said. "It's all about strengthening as we close in on the end of the season. I am extremely proud of our toughness and our road warrior mentality this semester." 

The Stars put together a 9-2 run to open the game. Wilson downed 3-pointers at the start and the end of that onslaught. Oklahoma City held Panhandle State scoreless for the first 4:15 of the game. 

OCU limited Panhandle State to 30.1 percent shooting from the field (22-for-73), keeping an opponent's field-goal percentage below 35 percent for the eighth time this season. 

Wilson, a senior human performance major from Greenland, Ark., notched six rebounds and two assists. Cacie Gorman, a junior psychology major from Watonga, Okla., produced her first double-double of 2022-23 with 15 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots while shooting 6-for-8 from the floor. 

Annilia Dawn, a senior psychology major from Amarillo, Texas, totaled nine points and seven rebounds. Witt equaled her career high with seven assists to go with seven points, while Gordon added seven points, seven rebounds and a career-high four steals. Amiya Howard picked up seven points off the bench for the Stars. 

Oklahoma City faces John Brown (Ark.) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
