Stars Split Doubleheader At Southwestern Assemblies of God

OCU fails to score for first time in 74 contests

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University split a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader with Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Friday afternoon at the SAGU Softball Field.

OCU won the opener by run rule 17-2 in five innings but SAGU rebounded for a 1-0 win in game two. The Stars (28-3, 14-2 SAC) suffered their first shutout loss since a 1-0 setback to Ottawa (Kan.) on March 6, 2021 at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, ending a streak of OCU scoring in 74 consecutive games.

The Stars scored 10 runs on eight hits in the second inning of the opener to post a quick insurmountable lead. Two of those hits were for extra bases, with senior right fielder Brooklyn Mason delivering a bases loaded triple to push the lead to 7-2 and junior catcher Amy Crabaugh delivering a two-run homer to center field to increase the lead to 10-2.

Eight players contributed to a total of 15 hits for the Stars. Senior second baseman Nicole Robinson led the hit parade with four hits and three RBIs. Also recording three RBIs were Mason, with her bases clearing triple, and junior first baseman Mallory McCoy, who hit her first home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Junior Shelbey Cornelson (17-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks.

OCU collected six hits and stranded four runners in losing the second game. None of those runners made it past second base.

SAGU (27-14, 15-9) won the game on a fifth inning RBI single by Ashlyn Teran.

Senior Lexi Duff (11-2) took the loss despite allowing just one run on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

OCU will stay in North Texas to play a key SAC doubleheader against Texas Wesleyan on Saturday in Fort Worth. First pitch at Sycamore Park is scheduled for 2 p.m.
