OKLAHOMA CITY – Shelbey Cornelson limited Mid-America Christian to one hit in top-ranked Oklahoma City University's 1-0 victory Monday at Allen Field.
Oklahoma City, ranked No. 1 in NAIA softball, completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 win in the late game. The Stars moved to 33-4, 19-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Cornelson, a junior from Tuttle, Okla., allowed only Janessa Larman's single in the bottom of the first inning Monday. Cornelson (20-2) struck out 10 in a seven-inning complete-game effort. Cornelson retired 15 batters in a row after Larman's hit before permitting Cailey Parsells to reach on a walk with two out in the sixth.
Lexi Duff nailed a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth just to the right of second base to account for the only run of the game. Tiffany Paul preceded Duff's at-bat with a base hit to right field. Paul swiped second base, then scored from second on Duff's hit.
Paul, a redshirt freshman from Choctaw, Okla., turned in a 2-for-3 performance. Kaitlyn Jones added a double in the second.
Paul drove in three runs, while Kennedy Jackson scored four times in the second game. OCU scored first on Paul's sacrifice fly to right in the first inning, then Paul tacked on an RBI single to right-center in the third.
In the fifth, Paul had a run-scoring single to left, while Jones nailed an RBI base hit to right to put the Stars ahead 5-0. Amy Crabaugh had a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth.
Nicole Robinson reached home plate on Jackson's bunt in the sixth. Rally Radacy closed out the scoring by crushing an RBI triple to right, then scoring herself on a throwing error.
Jackson, a senior from Moore, Okla., posted a 3-for-3 outing with four runs scored, a double, two steals and an RBI. Paul went 2-for-3 with three runs driven in, a run scored and three steals. Crabaugh, a junior from Edmond, Okla., was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Duff, a senior from Lone Grove, Okla., remained perfect through 3.1 innings before Mikaylee Allen's infield hit in the fourth. Duff held Mid-America Christian to three hits in six innings while striking out five. OCU turned a double play in the fifth.
The Stars meet Langston in a 2 p.m. twin bill Tuesday in Langston, Okla.
