OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University junior
Shelbey Cornelson has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after going 5-0 with a save in six appearances last week to help lead the No. 4 Stars to a perfect 6-0 record.Â
Cornelson was phenomenal in a doubleheader sweep over No. 3 Science & Arts on Mar. 1, notching wins in both games as she tossed a complete game in the opener, allowing just one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out a season-high 11 batters in a 4-1 victory. In game two, the Tuttle High School grad was clutch in a relief role, tossing the final 2.2 innings and allowing only one earned run on two hits with a walk and five strikeouts to guide the Stars to a 5-3 victory.Â
Cornelson went 3-0 with a save in four games played at the Red Dirt Classic on Friday and Saturday. She earned a win over NCAA Division I foe Grambling and a save against McPherson (Kan.) on Friday before earning wins over Kansas Wesleyan and Texas A&M-San Antonio on Saturday.Â
In the four Red Dirt Classic games, Cornelson allowed four runs on 14 hits with 22 strikeouts and five walks in a combined 18.2 innings pitched.Â
Corrnelson currently has the best record in the Sooner Athletic Conference at 10-0 while also leading the conference with 91 strikeouts. She has the SAC's third-lowest ERA at 1.54.
