OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City came up short to John Brown (Ark.) 66-51 on Tuesday night inside Abe Lemons Arena.
Annilia Dawn tallied 18 points, four assists and six rebounds to lead the Stars. She made five of the Stars' eight 3-pointers. OCU dropped to 3-6, 1-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball.
The Stars did not seem fazed early on and played some of their best defense all season with three blocks, seven steals and 11 forced turnovers. JBU also showed off their defensive prowess with seven blocks and six steals.
OCU had their only lead of just two in the second period with 7:26 remaining off a Ray Osborn jump shot. There were only three ties and four lead changes in the game, with all coming in the first half. OCU trailed by seven for its largest deficit in the first half.
The Stars showed signs of life early in the third after a solid defensive block by Amaya Gordon and a Ray Osborn crossover into an and-one against a Golden Eagle player. OCU trailed 39-32 after a pair of made free throws by Dawn with 4:34 remaining in the third. OCU finished the third period trailing by 12.
The Golden Eagles didn't look back and built up an insurmountable lead led by 2019-20 SAC Freshman of the Year Tarrah Stephens with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
"It was a tough loss, but there is no shortage of fight in this squad as we continue to build and compete," OCU coach Kris Seigenthaler said.
Dawn, a senior psychology major from Amarillo, Texas, posted her career high with five treys. Amaya Gordon, a junior criminal justice major from Ardmore, Okla., helped out with 10 rebounds, and Cacie Gorman, a junior psychology major from Watonga, Okla., scored eight to go along with four rebounds.
OCU looks forward to a matchup against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 6 p.m. Thursday inside Abe Lemons Arena.
