OCU rallies past Wayland Baptist

Dunlap provides Stars consecutive 30-dig performances

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fended off Wayland Baptist (Texas) 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 27-25 on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena. 

The Stars secured the win by reeling off a 6-1 game-clinching run. Oklahoma City improved to 13-13, 11-8 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball. 

Facing a 24-21 fourth-set deficit, Ruby Kelley rallied OCU with back-to-back kills and teaming with Hannah Grundy and Marina Kaladjzic on a block to the tie the set.  

Kelley knotted the score 25-25 with a kill, then Kaitlyn Dunlap landed an ace. Michela De Stefano knocked down a kill to give the Stars the victory. 

In the third set, Hannah Grundy nailed consecutive kills to build an 8-1 OCU advantage. The Stars closed out the set with seven points in a row. Rylee Steward smacked a kill and twice combined with De Stefano on blocks during that stretch. 

In the second set, Kalajdzic had a kill, then a combined block with Kelley to build a 6-0 cushion for the Stars. 

Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., posted her ninth double-double with 18 kills, 14 digs and five blocks. Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., added 15 kills and five blocks.  

Emma Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., had her third consecutive double-double with 27 assists, 10 digs and two aces, while Cassidy DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, turned in 25 assists and nine digs. 

Kaitlyn Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, made the 30-dig club for the third time this season and second match in a row with 30 digs and three aces. 

The Stars face Panhandle State at 1 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the final match of the regular season.
