CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University fell to Science & Arts 77-72 on Saturday at the Drover Fieldhouse.
Elaine Witt had her best game as a Star with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field including 3-for-3 from deep. Witt, a sophomore from Dale, Okla., also supplied four assists. The Stars fell to 1-3, 0-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball play.
The Stars' two setbacks in conference play have been by five points or less.
"That's a tough loss on the road, but we fought hard," OCU coach Kris Seigenthaler said. "Texas Wesleyan and Science & Arts have given us a lot of experience. Inch by inch we are building our reputation inside the SAC and refuse to back down."
The Stars led by five points at the end of the first thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Amiya Howard. The Stars jumped out to a 41-34 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. It was a back-and-forth game up until the Drovers took a 66-64 lead with 3:14 remaining. The Stars' last lead came with 3:39 remaining on a Amaya Gordon jump shot.
Fiona Wilson sank two 3s in the final 40 seconds to cut the lead to one with 20 second seconds left, but it ultimately was not enough as the Drovers hit one of their own.
Wilson, the senior from Greenland, Ark., ended with a double-double in back-to-back games with 10 rebounds and 12 points. Amaya Gordon, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., had 15 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field with four rebounds. Amiya Howard, also a junior from Ardmore, Okla., supported off the bench with 12 points, three assists and three rebounds. Eight of those 12 points came in the first period.
Oklahoma City competes in the Our Lady of the Lake Classic on Monday and Tuesday in San Antonio. The Stars face Iowa Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Monday.
