Stars fend off Central Christian 60-57

OCU erase early 7-0 deficit

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed over Central Christian (Kan.) 60-57 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.

Romario Spence, a senior from Luton, England, turned in his third double-double in a row for the Stars. Oklahoma City went to 9-10, 8-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.

Spence sparked OCU with 20 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots to tie his season-best scoring output. Ryan Birt, a senior from Plano, Texas, collected 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists for the Stars, hauling in his career-high rebound total.

The Stars limited Central Christian to 32.9 percent shooting from the field and 9.7 percent shooting from 3-point range (3-for-31). OCU held an opponent to less than a 35 percent field-goal percentage for the third time this season.

Central Christian's shooting clip from beyond the arc accounted for the lowest 3-point shooting by an OCU opponent since Southwestern Christian struggled to 2-for-21 shooting (9.5 percent) on Feb. 5, 2019 at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU leads the NAIA by holding foes to the lowest 3-point percentage in the country.

Oklahoma City took a 35-24 advantage with 16:37 remaining on Spence's foul shot. Central Christian cut OCU's edge to three points three times in the second period, but the Stars maintained the lead throughout the second half. Rashaun Coleman nailed four free throws in the final 33 seconds to spearhead OCU.

Central Christian scored the game's first seven points. OCU reeled off a 7-0 run to move ahead 9-8. Isaiah Rivera answered with a layup, but Spence responded with a bucket at the 12:51 mark.

Oklahoma City squares off with Langston at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in Langston, Okla.
