Stars make NAIA Championship Opening Round

OCU takes on Our Lady of the Lake at 1 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University meets Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the NAIA Volleyball Championship Opening Round.
The Stars (14-2) qualified for the NAIA Championships for the sixth time in program history and fifth time in a row. Oklahoma City, ranked 21st, hosts an NAIA Championship Opening Round for the second time.
OCU collected its national-tournament bid by capturing the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season championship for the fifth consecutive year. The Stars wrapped up sweeping the SAC regular-season and tournament titles for the fifth year in a row after an 18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 win over Texas Wesleyan on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Sophia Salak scooped up SAC tournament most valuable player for the second year in a row. Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, accumulated 53 assists and seven digs in the title bout and averaged 13.00 assists, 1.55 digs and 0.45 aces per set throughout the tournament. Salak tops the NAIA with 12.18 assists a set this season.
OCU's Ella Lofton picked up all-tournament. Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, produced 15 kills and 20 digs to finish with 3.45 kills, 4.09 digs, 0.55 blocks and 0.27 aces a set during the tournament.
Our Lady of the Lake (11-3) reached the NAIA Championships by virtue of winning the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. The Stars knocked off Our Lady of the Lake 25-23, 25-12, 27-25 on April 3 in Plainview, Texas.
The winners in the NAIA Championship Opening Round move on to the NAIA Championships on April 27-May 1 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Pool play will occur April 27-28 followed by bracket play. The national championship match will be 7 p.m. May 1.
