OCU secures NAIA Southwest Qualifier crown

Stars ring up finest score of season in finals

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University collected the title in the NAIA Southwest Qualifying Group Competitive Dance Championships on Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars garnered a 94.16 score en route to their fourth consecutive crown in the national qualifier. OCU gained a spot in the NAIA Competitive Dance Championships on March 13-14 in Davenport, Iowa.
Oklahoma City wrapped up the No. 1 slot in the event by earning a season-best score in the finals of 94.67. The Stars put on a performance free of deductions. OCU became the only team in the qualifier to tally a score of 90 or more as Missouri Baptist finished second with an overall score of 84.48.
"Tonight was very interesting because we felt confident going into prelims, but knew that we needed more than just confidence in the finals," Oklahoma City pom/dance coach Tasha Hinex said. "Their finals performance was the true definition of leaving it all on the floor. I'm beyond proud of them and their shift of focus for the final round."
OCU seized the top spot in the finals with a preliminary score of 92.67.
Preliminary scores counted towards 25 percent of a team's overall score. Each team's finals performance counted for 75 percent of its total score.
The Stars captured the 2014 NAIA title in addition to four National Dance Alliance crowns.
