OCU demolishes Ottawa 56-0, Lyon 44-3

Stars post sixth shutout in program history

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma City University trampled Ottawa (Kan.) 56-0 and Lyon (Ark.) 44-3 on Wednesday at James Becknell Gymnasium.
The Stars cruised to their sixth shutout in program history and first since a 54-0 blanking of Central Baptist (Ark.) on Dec. 3, 2014 at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU, ranked fourth in NAIA wrestling, improved to 3-0 in duals.
Oklahoma City piled up 50 points for the fourth time in program history. The Stars scored their most points since a 59-0 romp past Grand Canyon (Ariz.) on Dec. 8, 2007. OCU rolled up five pins and two technical falls vs. Ottawa.
Bryson McGowan notched the fastest fall by a Star. McGowan, a sophomore from Hulbert, Okla., stuck the fall on Caelan McMahon in 12 seconds, surpassing the 18-second fall by Adam Delong over Brandon Norris of King (Tenn.) on Jan. 26, 2008.
"He got him in a body lock and ended his night," OCU coach C.J. Campbell said of McGowan's fall. "Mason Naifeh had a hard-fought match. Brok Williams put on a dominant performance. Those were the highlights of our day. We are pleased with the progress of the team so far."
Michael Sanchez posted the Stars' first fall of the day against Kylloe Goedert in 1:31 at 133 pounds. Matt Landgraff followed with a pin in 1:37 of Grant Hollingsworth in the 141-pound bout.
OCU's Isaiah Smith ended the 174-pound contest in 1:04 by pinning Carden Busby. Tanner Borror picked up the fall in 3:48 over Kyle Dillon at 184.
Eric Ambriz took a 16-1 technical-fall victory over Noah Hart at 157 for the Stars. Brok Williams scored a 20-3 dismantling of Trayvon Taylor in the 184-pound match.
Against Lyon, Mason Naifeh of the Stars edged Dustin Miller 10-8. Naifeh, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla., entered the match ranked 16th among NAIA 125-pounders, while Miller is ranked eighth in the latest rankings.
James Landoll of OCU pounded Roger Gasmann 16-0 for a technical fall at 149. Evan Hudson, Landgraff and Williams provided the Stars with major-decision wins.
Landgraff, a sophomore from Weeki Wachee, Fla., collected an 11-1 win over Robb Rodriguez, while Williams, a sophomore from Lawton, Okla., knocked off Connor Webber 13-2. Hudson, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, defeated Troy Mercer 16-4.
The Stars compete in the Lindenwood Joe Parisi Open at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Charles, Mo.
