Stars split twin bill with St. Gregory's

McSpadden closing in on career win No. 1,400

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University rallied past St. Gregory's 4-3 before falling 3-2 on Tuesday at St. Gregory's Field in a matchup of top 10-ranked NAIA softball squads.
Jamie Rateliff's RBI single in the top of the seventh inning brought the eighth-ranked Stars the win in the first contest. OCU went to 31-7, 14-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while fifth-ranked St. Gregory's moved to 29-5, 10-2 in SAC play.
The doubleheader split put coach Phil McSpadden's record at 1,399-349 in his 27th year leading OCU. The Stars next meet Oklahoma Baptist in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Down 3-1 with two out in the seventh, Kyndra Holasek pounded a double to left-center field. Cheyanne Terry bounced a base hit through the middle of the infield to score Holasek, cutting the Stars' deficit to 3-2.
Kylee Rounsaville doubled to center to tie the game 3-3. Shelbi Legg, pinch running for Rounsaville, reached home plate on Rateliff's base hit to center.
Danielle Fox retired Brooklyn Sparks and Allison Eales on popouts with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to preserve OCU's lead.
Terry, a junior from Little Axe, Okla., went 4-for-4, scored twice, drove in a run, doubled and stole a base for the Stars. Rounsaville, a junior from Yukon, Okla., went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Rateliff, a junior from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-4 with a run brought in for OCU.
Holasek, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Fox, a senior from Yukon, Okla., added a single.
Maci-Brooke Lambert, a junior from Healdton, Okla., notched the win after working 1.2 innings. Lambert improved to 6-2 on the year. Fox hurled the first 4.1 innings, then tossed the seventh to get her first save of the season.
In the second game, Emily Krienke hit an RBI double to left-center field to put OCU up 1-0 in the fourth. Terry doubled to left-center to drive in the Stars' second run of the game.
Maria Gomez shut out St. Gregory's on five hits through 6.1 innings. In the seventh, Courtni Clark of St. Gregory's tripled to right to drive in two runs and tie the game.
Whitney Anderson got hit by pitch with the bases full to make the difference in the game.
Holasek went 2-for-4 with a double and a steal, and Terry was 2-for-3 with a double. Jocelin Diaz, a junior from Maracay, Venezuela, went 1-for-2 with a run scored for OCU.
Gomez dropped to 11-3 on the year.
