The Stars captured qualifier titles in cheerleading and mascot for the third consecutive year.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took first place in cheerleading and mascot categories and finished as dance runner-up in the NAIA West Qualifying Group Cheerleading/Dance Championships on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars captured qualifier titles in cheerleading and mascot for the third consecutive year. OCU hosts the NAIA Cheerleading and Dance Championships on March 15.
Seven Stars collected all-American acclaim – five cheerleaders and two pom/dance performers. OCU cheerleaders Cierra Graham, Danny Mizufuka, Skylar Montesano, Karlee Morton and Kaleb Ogle took all-American honors, while the Stars' Rachel Ashwood and Kayle Marshall became pom all-Americans.
"Every team had amazing performances this weekend," OCU coach Brandy Corcoran said. "We are looking forward to the NAIA Championships. It will be fun to have the home crowd advantage. Our fans are great. Starsky was the only mascot in the competition, but that didn't stop him from giving a spectacular performance."
OCU edged St. Gregory's by 3.17 points in the cheerleading competition. The Stars rang up a finals score of 91.92.
Baker (Kan.) captured the dance portion of the competition by 1.67 points over OCU. The Stars had a score of 108.0.
OCU owns seven national championships in cheerleading and pom/dance won in the past three years. OCU won the NAIA large coed and large pom/dance championships in 2011, the NAIA all-girl and large coed crowns in 2012 and the NAIA all-girl and pom/dance titles and the NCA Division II coed championship in 2013.
