Stars fall to Lubbock Christian in SAC Tournament title game

OCU topped Oklahoma Baptist before falling to Lubbock Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University bested Oklahoma Baptist 7-4 but fell to Lubbock Christian (Texas) 6-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship game Saturday at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 5 in NAIA softball, withstood a late rally by Oklahoma Baptist to advance to the championship game where they fell victim to a three-run bottom of the seventh that gave Lubbock Christian the 6-5 victory and the SAC tournament title.
After Lubbock Christian took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the championship game, OCU scored four runs in the top of the third. RBI singles from Kyndra Holasek and Drew Wright put the Stars on top. Magean De La Torre followed with an RBI triple to increase the OCU advantage to 4-1.
The Lady Chaps got an RBI single from Stephanie Rendon in the bottom of the third and another from Kirstie Cochran in the bottom of the fifth to trim the Stars' lead to 4-3.
In the top of sixth, Jamie Rateliff blasted a solo home run to left field and gave OCU a 5-3 lead.
Lubbock Christian scored a pair of runs on an OCU throwing error and tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh. One batter later, the Lady Chaps pushed the winning run across on a wild pitch and took the 6-5 victory.
Danielle Fox allowed two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts while stranding 11 runners on base but was saddled with the loss.
In the early game, Emily Krienke doubled to right field to plate a pair of runs and give OCU a 2-1 lead in the second inning.
Hoalsek cleared the bases and made the score 5-1 in the fourth with a double to left center. LeeAnn Lopez followed with a single through the left side of the infield to plate Holasek and stretch the Stars' advantage to 6-1.
Oklahoma Baptist pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth, but Krienke responded with an RBI triple in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 7-2.
Kasey Maddox smacked a two run homer in bottom of the seventh, but Rateliff recovered to retire the Lady Bison and give OCU the 7-4 victory.
Rateliff allowed four runs on five hits with five strikeouts and picked up the win to improve to 21-3 on the season.
Holasek led the Stars at the plate with four RBIs on the day and Krienke followed with three.
The Stars will host the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round on May 13-15 at Ann Lacy Stadium.
