Stars pound Oklahoma Baptist 11-8, 11-2

OCU runs win streak to eight games

Drew Wright hit her seventh and eighth home runs of the year, posting her first multihomer game with OCU on Sunday.

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Six Oklahoma City University home runs powered the Stars past Oklahoma Baptist 11-8 and 11-2 on Sunday at Lady Bison Field.
OCU's Kyndra Holasek and LeeAnn Lopez slugged homers in the first game, while the Stars' Lopez and Magean De La Torre belted homers in the nightcap. Drew Wright went yard twice in the second game as the Stars, ranked ninth in NAIA softball, moved to 35-7, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Lopez hammered a two-run blast over the left-field fence to give OCU an 11-4 advantage in the seventh inning of the first game. Holasek doubled in a run, then scored on Lopez's homer.
Holasek led off the sixth by cranking a 1-2 pitch over the right-field fence. De La Torre laced an RBI single to left for an 8-4 OCU lead.
The Stars built a first-inning 2-0 edge. Wright hit a sacrifice fly that Audrey Branscum dropped in right field. Joyner scored on the fly ball, then Holasek reached home on the error.   
Lopez nailed a second-inning two-run double into the left-center field gap. Emily Krienke and Shelbi Legg brought home runs with infield hits in the third. Dara Gray answered for Oklahoma Baptist with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third, cutting OCU's lead to 6-4.
Holasek, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., went 3-for-5, scored four times and drove in three runs, and Lopez, a senior from Grand Prairie, Texas, was 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBIs. Jamie Rateliff, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Angela Lovelady, a senior from El Cajon, Calif., went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored for the Stars.
Rateliff improved to 13-0 on the year. Rateliff struck out three in seven innings, notching her ninth complete game in 13 starts.
In the second game, Wright smacked a three-run shot to left in the first for OCU. With two out in the third, Lopez and Wright pounded back-to-back homers.
The Stars erupted for six runs in the sixth. Wright put OCU ahead 6-2 with an RBI single to center. De La Torre struck for a two-run homer on a full-count offering. Krienke added an RBI single, then scored from third when Legg got caught in a rundown.
Wright, a senior from Moore, Okla., had a season-high five RBIs while going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while De La Torre, a senior from Plano, Texas, went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Stars. Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., went 1-for-2, scored twice and collected her 39th stolen base of the year.
Rachel Penner (6-2) fanned seven in five innings while allowing two runs on three hits and four walks. Penner, a freshman from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, survived putting five runners via hit by pitch.
OCU meets Evangel (Mo.) in a 2 p.m. twin bill Tuesday in Springfield, Mo.
