Stars post sweep of St. Gregory's

Seventh-ranked OCU wins 1-0, 9-5 over No. 12 St. Gregory's

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University held off St. Gregory's 1-0 and 9-5 on Tuesday at the St. Gregory's softball complex in a clash of top 15-ranked teams in the NAIA.
Magean De La Torre drove in the only run of the first game before Drew Wright's three-run double put OCU in front in the second game. The seventh-ranked Stars improved to 38-10, 14-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while 12th-ranked St. Gregory's fell to 30-9, 11-7 in league play.
In the first game, Jamie Rateliff shut down St. Gregory's on six hits and two hit by pitch. Rateliff, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., posted her fifth shutout and 12th complete game while striking out one. Rateliff moved to 15-2.
Rateliff retired the first eight batters she faced in order. Callie Pacheco singled with two out in the third, then Allison Conyers reached on a hit by pitch. Rateliff responded by getting Melanie Gladden on a groundout. Rateliff got St. Gregory's to strand two runners each in the fourth and the sixth.
In the fourth, LeeAnn Lopez led the inning off with a walk. De La Torre smacked a double to right-center to bring home Kayley Humann, who ran for Lopez.
Rateliff finished the game with the tying run on third. Jordan Walters singled to begin the bottom of the seventh. Walters reached third after a groundout and a sacrifice bunt. Rateliff got Gladden out on a ground ball to second base.
De La Torre went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Wright went 1-for-2. Lopez, a senior from Grand Prairie, Texas, was 1-for-3.
In the second game, Tori Joyner and Kyndra Holasek rallied OCU with two-out base hits in the sixth. Lopez drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Wright belted a bases-clearing to double to right-center field to give the Stars an 8-5 advantage.
Angela Lovelady tacked on a sacrifice fly to put OCU ahead 9-5 in the seventh.
Walters and Conyers had singles for St. Gregory's in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and third with one out. Rateliff retired Gladden on a popout and Danielle Bacon on a lineout to snuff out the St. Gregory's uprising.
OCU overcame a 3-1 second-inning deficit. Lopez hammered a two-run home run to right to tie the game in the third.
Holasek pounded a two-run blast past the right-field fence to produce a 5-3 Stars lead in the fifth. Gladden answered with an RBI double, then Conyers reached home plate on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning.
Holasek, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., went 4-for-4, scored three times, doubled and drove in two runs, while Wright, a senior from Moore, Okla., was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Joyner, a senior from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, and De La Torre, a senior from Plano, Texas, was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Rachel Penner notched the victory, moving to 7-3 on the year. Rateliff collected her second save of the year by working the final two innings.
The Stars meet St. Gregory's in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
