Stars edge St. Gregory's 67-66

Terry Johnson hit jumper in the final seconds to snap OCU's five-game losing streak

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University escaped with a 67-66 victory over St. Gregory's Thursday at W.P. Wood Field House.
Junior Terry Johnson hit a perimeter jumper to put the Stars on top by one point with two seconds remaining on the clock. Fayzon Richey missed a full-court heave at the buzzer to give OCU, 9-7 overall and 2-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, the narrow victory.
“We didn't show a lot of confidence in the first half,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “It all changed in the second half when we decided to compete. It was good to get that gorilla off our back and get a win.”
Troynell Adams hit a 3-pointer at the 9:23 mark to cut St. Gregory's lead to four, but the Cavaliers responded with a 14-5 run to take a 22-10 lead with 5:58 to go in the first half.
OCU got five points apiece Adams and Terrence Walker to close the half and cut the St. Gregory's lead to 28-20 at halftime.
The Stars only shot 38 percent from the floor in the first half while being outrebounded 22-11. OCU got nine points from Walker and eight from Adams in the period.
OCU got three straight buckets from Charlton Jones, Adams and Walker to cut the Cavalier's lead to 4 points with 16:20 remaining in the half.
St. Gregory's maintained its lead until Ivan Matip and Jones buried back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to 41-40 at the 14:04 mark.
OCU tied the score at the 11:31 and 9:16 marks of the second half but was unable to take the lead.
Six unanswered points from Jones and Elhadji Wade gave the Stars their first lead of the game at 59-58 with 3:57 remaining in the game.
Paco Jones converted a pair of free throws to give St. Gregory's a 66-65 lead with 34 seconds remaining on the clock.
After an OCU timeout, Jones found Johnson at the top of the key and Johnson buried the perimeter jumper with two second left to give the Stars 67-66 victory.
The Stars shot a blazing 64 percent from the floor in the second half to erase the eight-point halftime deficit. OCU hit 9-of-11 from the free throw line in the second frame after only shooting 27 percent from the charity stripe in the first half.
Adams led the OCU charge with a game-high 24 points. The senior from Chicago scored 16 points in the second half and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Jones posted 13 points, four rebounds and four assists on the night, and Walker notched 13 points and went 6-for-6 from the floor.
OCU will return to action against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at Abe Lemons Arena.
