OCU opens SAC softball tournament vs. Oklahoma Baptist

Third-ranked Stars enter tournament with No. 1 seed

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University will open play in the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament vs. Oklahoma Baptist at 11 a.m. Friday at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA softball, finished the regular season 36-17 overall and 21-4 in SAC play and received the No. 1 seed in the tournament. OCU swept the four-game season series with Oklahoma Baptist. The Stars will play either St. Gregory's or Oklahoma Christian at 3 p.m. Friday.
The SAC Tournament champion will gain a spot in the NAIA Championships on May 17-23 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
OCU has captured SAC Tournament titles in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011.
The Stars are led by senior pitcher Lily LaVelle. The right-hander from Bridge Creek, Okla., leads the NAIA in total strikeouts with 403 and wins with a record of 33-2. LaVelle owns a 0.95 earned run average and has tossed 34 complete games.
LaVelle also leads OCU at the plate with a .444 batting average, 67 runs batted in and 19 home runs.
LeeAnn Lopez, of Grand Prairie, Texas, checks in with 18 home runs, third in the NAIA, and 18 doubles for OCU this season. The junior first baseman has driven in 54 runs with an .865 slugging percentage. Lopez owns a .972 fielding percentage at first.
