Stars top Williams Baptist 5-0, advance to bracket play

OCU finishes 3-0 in pool C to advance to bracket play

Kylee Rounsaville went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs against Williams Baptist on Saturday.
GULF SHORES, Ala. – Third-ranked Oklahoma City University downed Williams Baptist (Ark.) 5-0 Saturday to win pool C and advance to NAIA softball championships bracket play at Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
The Stars, No. 3 in the NAIA, finished 3-0 in pool play and will take on William Carey (Miss.), winner of pool F, on Monday at 10 a.m. CDT in the double-elimination bracket.
OCU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Kylee Rounsaville singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Tori Joyner.
LeeAnn Lopez plated a pair of runs in the top of the third when she doubled to left-center field to make the score 3-0. Later in the inning, Lopez scored on an error to push the Stars' lead to 4-0.
The Stars tacked on an extra run in the top of the seventh when Rounsaville singled to right to score Joyner from second and make the score 5-0.
Lily LaVelle struck out two batters in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order to give OCU the 5-0 victory.
LaVelle allowed four hits, struck out nine and tossed seven scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve to 39-3 on the season. The senior from Bridge Creek, Okla., increased her season-strikeout total to 486 and her career strikeout total to 1,357.
Lopez and Rounsaville drove in two runs apiece to lead OCU at the dish.
OCU notched its 106th victory in NAIA softball championships play to increase its record number. OCU has captured NAIA softball titles in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2007.
