OCU nips USAO 2-1, 2-1

The sweep moves the Stars to 34-17 overall and 19-4 in SAC play

Lily LaVelle blasted her 18th home run of the season against USAO Saturday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Third-ranked Oklahoma City University topped USAO 2-1 and 2-1 in a doubleheader Saturday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The sweep moves the Stars, No. 3 in NAIA softball, to 34-17 overall and 19-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
After USAO grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Lily LaVelle doubled to right field to plate Tori Joyner and later scored on an error to give OCU a 2-1 lead through five innings.
LaVelle struck out 16 USAO batters en route to the 2-1 victory. The senior from Bridge Creek, Okla., allowed one run on three hits in seven innings to move to 32-2 on the season.
LaVelle went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead OCU at the dish.
OCU struck first in game No. 2 when Joyner singled to left to score Magean De La Torre from third base and make the score 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
LaVelle led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left field to stretch the Stars' lead to 2-0.
USAO's Markie Laferney homered in the top of the sixth and the Drovers had a runner on third in top of the seventh, but LaVelle struck out Sara Reeves to retire the side and give OCU the 2-1 win.
A.J. Woodward picked up the win to move to 13-1 on the season. The senior right-hander allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings of work. LaVelle tossed 1.1 innings out of the bullpen and earned her sixth save of the season.
Joyner went 2-for-4 with an RBI and LaVelle finished 1-for-2 with a home run to lead the Stars at the plate.
OCU will return to action against Rogers State in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
