OCU splits doubleheader with West Texas A&M

Stars took the first game 5-0, dropped second 14-5 against second-ranked team in NCAA Division II

Katie Proffitt went 3-for-5 with an RBI in two games against West Texas A&M on Tuesday.
CANYON, Texas – Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with West Texas A&M Tuesday at Lady Buff Yard.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA softball, took the first game 5-0 behind a 19-strikeout performance from senior Lily LaVelle. OCU dropped game No. 2 14-5 to move to 15-2 on the season.
OCU jumped on top of West Texas A&M, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, in the top of the third inning when Haley Anderson doubled to right center field to drive in LaVelle to make the score 1-0.
Katie Proffitt and Tori Joyner led off the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles and LaVelle followed with a home run to left to put OCU on top 4-0. Later in the inning Kylee Rounsaville singled up the middle to score LeeAnn Lopez from third and make the score 5-0 in favor of the Stars.
LaVelle tossed seven scoreless innings to give OCU the 5-0 win. The senior from Bridge Creek, Okla., allowed two hits and struck out 19 batters to move to 9-1 on the season.
LaVelle went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Stars at the dish. Anderson and Rounsaville drove in one run apiece.
Magean De La Torre homered to left in the bottom of second, but OCU trailed 8-2 in game No. 2.
LaVelle led off the top of the third with a double to left center and Anderson followed with a two-run home run to left center to cut the West Texas A&M lead to 11-3.
Proffitt singled to left to score Rounsaville in the top of the fifth to make the score 12-5, but West Texas A&M pushed four more runs across in the bottom of the inning to pick up the run-rule win 14-5.
A.J. Woodward allowed 14 runs on six hits and struck out 10 in 4.2 innings of work and moves to 4-1 on the season.
Anderson led the Stars at the plate going 1-fo-2 with two RBIs. De La Torre and Proffitt drove in one run apiece.
The Stars will play a doubleheader against Oklahoma Wesleyan for their home opener at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
