Stars sweep doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist

OCU won 8-3 and 2-1 to move to 17-2 overall

Tori Joyner drove in two runs in two games against Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday.
SHAWNEE, Okla. – Third-ranked Oklahoma City University swept a doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist, winning 8-3 and 2-1 Tuesday at Lady Bison Field.
The sweep moves the Stars, No. 3 in the NAIA, to 17-2 overall and 5-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Tori Joyner led off the top of the first inning with a single and LeeAnn Lopez put the Stars in front 2-0 with a two-run home run.
In the top of the second, Lily LaVelle singled to center field to plate Kylee Rounsaville from third and put OCU on top 3-0.
Magean De La Torre doubled to left center in the top of third to drive in Lopez and make the score 4-2. The Stars scored two runs off Oklahoma Baptist errors and Danielle Fox scored on a LeValle walk to put OCU on top 7-2.
Rounsaville came through with an RBI single to give the Stars an 8-2 advantage in the top of the forth.
Oklahoma Baptist managed a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as the score would get as OCU took the 8-3 victory.
LaVelle picked up the win to move to 10-1 on the season. The senior from Bridge Creek, Okla., tossed five innings and struck out seven batters.
A.J. Woodward pitched two innings in relief and allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts.
LaVelle, Lopez and Rounsaville led the Stars at the plate with 2 RBIs apiece.
Katie Proffitt tripled in the top of the fifth and later scored on a Joyner sacrifice fly to tie the score at 1-1 in the second game.
OCU took a 2-1 lead in the top eighth when Lopez scored on a De La Torre sacrifice fly.
LaVelle retired the Lady Bison in order in the bottom of the eighth and OCU took the 2-1 victory in extra innings.
Lavelle recorded 17 strikeouts in eight innings of work to pick up her 11th win of the season.
De La Torre and Joyner drove in OCU's only runs.
The Stars will host Huston-Tillotson (Texas) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
