Stars split doubleheader with Southern Nazarene

OCU grabbed the first game 10-2 and dropped the second 14-12

Lily LaVelle struck out 10 and recorded eight RBIs on the day against Southern Nazarene.
BETHANY, Okla. – N0. 3 Oklahoma City split a doubleheader with Southern Nazarene Tuesday winning the first game 10-2 and dropping the second 14-12 at the Cypert Athletic Complex.
The split moves the Stars to 4-1 on the young season and 1-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
LeeAnn Lopez put OCU on top early in game No. 1 with a double to left field driving in Tori Joyner and making the score 1-0. Lopez later scored on an error to give the Stars a 2-0 in the top of the first.
In the top of the fourth Lily LaVelle hit a solo home run to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Stars. Later in the inning Magean De La Torre doubled down the left-field line to plate two more runs and give OCU a 6-1 lead.
OCU pushed three more runs across in the top of the fourth. Danielle Fox, Katie Proffitt and Joyner all drove in runs to make the score 9-1.
Proffitt added another run in the top of the sixth with an RBI triple to left-center field to give OCU a 10-2 lead.
LaVelle struck out two and induced a ground out to third in the bottom of the sixth to finish the game and give the Stars a 10-2 win.
LaVelle allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work and struck out 10 batters to move to 3-0 on the season.
Proffitt led the way at the dish going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. De La Torre finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Six Stars drove in at lead one run on the game.
Angela Lovelady put OCU on top in the game No.2 with an RBI single through the left side to make the score 1-0 in the top of the first.
Southern Nazarene answered with eight runs on five hits in the bottom half of the first to take an 8-1 lead.
LaVelle drew a lead-off walk in the top of the third and Kylee Rounsaville followed with a home run to left field to cut the Southern Nazarene lead to 8-3.
Southern Nazarene added four more runs in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 12-3.
OCU countered with four runs in the top of the fourth on a LaVelle grand slam to center field to make the score 12-7.
After the Crimson Storm added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, De La Torre led off the top of the fifth with a home run to make the score 14-8. Later in the inning LaVelle homered to center to score three more runs and cut the lead to 14-11.
Lovelady singled to plate LaVelle from second base and make the score 14-12 with two outs in the top of the seventh. De La Torre flied out to left field for the final out of the game and Stars fell 14-12.
LaVelle got the loss, tossing 2.2 innings and allowed nine runs on seven hits. Fox gave up three runs on four hits and failed to record an out in the bottom of the third. A.J. Woodward finished the game, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out two batters.
LaVelle led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. Lovelady and Rounsaville each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Stars will return to action in the St. Gregory's Invitational at noon Friday in Farmer's Branch, Texas.
