OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dispatched Western State (Colo.) 1-0 Sunday at Stars Field to give OCU coach Brian Harvey his 300th career win.
Harvey is the winningest active coach in NAIA women's soccer with an all-time record of 300-82-20. Harvey has the most combined men's and women's wins of any NAIA soccer coach with a record of 671-242-53.
“To be honest players win games, so I was very pleased for the girls,” Harvey said. “It's a tremendous achievement and a milestone in anybody's career. It all goes down to all the girls that have ever played here and have given their best and given their all in every game.”
The Stars got a second-half goal from junior Meghan McMahon, of Oklahoma City, and held on to move to 9-1 on the season.
The Stars had scoring chances early, but senior Sheridan Horner, of Choctaw, Okla., hit the cross bar with her shot in the 8th minute and McMahon put the rebound high over the goal to keep the score at 0-0.
McMahon and junior Gianna Puskarich, of Fairview, Texas, each put shots on goal later in the first half, but Western State goalkeeper Meghan Jedrzejewski stopped all three attempts to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
In the 46th minute, McMahon took a pass from freshman Allison Worsham, of Edmond, Okla., and beat Jedrzejewski to net her 12th goal of the season and make the score 1-0 in favor of the Stars.
Junior goalkeepers Ashley Bechtold, of Oklahoma City, and Alissa Reed, of Fort Worth, Texas, split time between the posts. Bechtold got the start and played the first half. Reed made one save in 45 minutes of work.
The Stars will return to action against Sooner Athletic Conference foe Oklahoma Baptist at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Stars Field.
