Stars split a pair with OBU

Misuraca hits first home run as Star

Tori Joyner scored the eventual winning run in the second game Thursday.

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with Oklahoma Baptist, falling 3-0 before rebounding for a 3-2 win Thursday at Lady Bison Field.

The Stars, ranked 10th in NAIA softball, went to 36-11, 18-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. No. 25 Oklahoma Baptist moved to 32-16, 18-8.

OCU rallied for the 3-2 win using Nathalie Timmermans' RBI groundout and Brittany Caruthers' run-scoring double in the sixth inning.

Shari Misuraca whacked her first career home run with OCU in the third.

Krystal Johnson cut OCU's lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth. A.J. Woodward snuffed out the Oklahoma Baptist threat with a strikeout to retire the side. Woodward kept Oklahoma Baptist at bay by working a 1-2-3 seventh.

Woodward, a junior from Menifee, Calif., struck out four and scattered eight hits in seven innings. Woodward improved to 14-4.

Misuraca, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, went 2-for-2, scored twice and drove in a run for the Stars. Caruthers, a sophomore from Waxahachie, Texas, went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Tori Joyner, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Kylee Rounsaville notched OCU's other hit.

In the first game, LaVelle struck out 10 and allowed three runs on three hits in six innings. LaVelle fell to 21-7. Noelle McDowell picked up the victory.

McDowell stranded two OCU runners in the fourth. The Stars had one runner on when the game ended.

The Stars meet Rogers State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Claremore, Okla.
