HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Oklahoma City University pitchers tossed a pair of one-hitters in beating Grand View (Iowa) 6-0 and Georgetown (Ky.) 5-0 on Wednesday at Fail Field in the William Carey Invitational.
The Stars' A.J. Woodward kept Grand View without a hit through 4.1 innings, while Lily LaVelle set Georgetown down in order through 2.2 innings. OCU, ranked 10th in NAIA softball, moved to 15-3.
Woodward, a junior from Menifee, Calif., struck out the side in the second inning as Grand View managed only Anna Arnold's base hit in the fifth. Woodward (7-1) walked two, allowed a hit by pitch and struck out 11 batters in a seven-inning, complete-game performance.
OCU scored twice in the second using an error and Katie Proffitt's run-scoring single. Brittany Caruthers drove in a run on a base hit, and Nathalie Timmermans scored on an error to give OCU a 4-0 third-inning advantage.
Proffitt added an RBI single in the sixth, while Timmermans nailed a solo home run in the seventh.
Proffitt, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Tori Joyner, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-4 with a run scored for OCU. Magean De La Torre, a sophomore from Plano, Texas, was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
LaVelle, a junior from Bridge Creek, Okla., fanned Georgetown's first three batters to start the game. Georgetown mustered Chelsea Riney's base hit, a walk and one other base runner against LaVelle, who struck out nine. LaVelle improved to 7-2.
Timmermans drove in OCU's first run on a third-inning double. Timmermans added another RBI double in the fifth.
OCU plated four runs in the fifth as Caruthers and Kylee Rounsaville had RBI singles. Rounsaville scored on an error.
Timmermans, a junior from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while De La Torre went 2-for-3 with a run driven in. Caruthers, a sophomore from Waxahachie, Texas, also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Stars meet William Carey (Miss.) at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hattiesburg, Miss.
