Stars clinch SAC regular-season title with 3-1 win over Southern Nazarene

OCU earns automatic bid in the NAIA Championship Opening Round on Nov. 19

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University women's soccer sewed up its 11th Sooner Athletic Conference championship Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over 23rd-ranked Southern Nazarene at Wes Harmon Field.
The Stars, ranked 15th in the NAIA, moved to 15-1-1 on the season and 10-0-1 in SAC play. OCU won the SAC regular-season and tournament titles a season ago.
SNU jumped on top early when Kayla Thompson scored off a Jackie Acevedo free kick in the 25th minute of the match to make the score 1-0.
The Stars evened the score in the 31st minute when junior Sheridan Horner scored her eighth goal of the season assisted by sophomore Blerta Rashica to make the score 1-1.
Sophomore Meghan McMahon broke the tie in the 69th minute when she took a long pass from junior Brenna Skillern and scored her 17th goal of the season to make the score 2-1.
Skillern put the game out of reach with her fourth goal of the season in the 90th minute to make the score 3-1.
OCU was outshot 12-9, but put five shots on goal to come away with the 3-1 victory.
Sophomore goalkeepers Ashley Bechtold and Alissa Reed shared time in goal. Bechtold allowed one goal and recorded no saves in the first half, and Reed made one save in the second half.
With the win the Stars will enter the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host a first-round match against Lubbock Christian at noon Saturday. OCU also clinched an automatic bid in the NAIA Championship Opening Round on Nov. 19.
