LEWISTON, Idaho – Oklahoma City University ended its season with an 8-5 setback to Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) on Tuesday at Harris Field in the NAIA World Series.
Chad Blauer turned in a complete-game, 166-pitch effort for 17th-ranked Point Loma Nazarene (41-19-1) on three days rest after going nine innings Friday. The sixth-ranked Stars finished up 50-16.
Blauer allowed three earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out 11. Allen Boyer went 3-for-4 to lead Point Loma.
Chad Carman went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Brian Fisher and Terrance Jackson were each 2-for-5 with a run scored for OCU. Drew McAdoo went 2-for-4.
Matt Presley cranked his team-high 25th home run of the year and made it a 5-3 Point Loma lead in the fourth. Presley, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., turned on a 1-1 fastball to launch a drive out of the ballpark over the fence in right-center field.
The Stars cut their deficit to 6-5 in the sixth. Carman knocked in a run on a single to left. Mark Purser was hit by pitch to load the bases. Scott Dalrymple brought in OCU's other run of the inning on a double-play grounder.
Point Loma Nazarene extended its lead to 8-5 in the seventh. Steven Winnick scored via fielder's obstruction from third base on Drew Bernhard's bunt to the pitcher's mound. Alex Cameron grounded out to bring in another Point Loma run.
Point Loma struck for four runs in the third. Jeff Fox had an RBI base hit to left field. Wes Kartch drove in two runs on a double to right-center, then Winnick brought in another run on a groundout. Point Loma chased OCU starting pitcher Mike Richard after 2.2 innings.
Alec Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk to put Point Loma Nazarene ahead 6-3 in the fifth.
The Stars took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. OCU took advantage of Karch's throwing error at third base to score Jackson from third and Fisher from second.
OCU's seniors have been a part of the winningest program in the nation with 1,023 since 1991. OCU extended its streak of 50-win seasons to 12, going 210-48 the past four years with the 2007 Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, the 2008 Region VI Championship and Mid-South Super Regional Championship, 2010 SAC Tournament title, the 2009 and 2010 Championship Opening-Round Tournament titles and two third-place finishes in the NAIA World Series.
McAdoo was a leader in the clubhouse during his three years with OCU. His career numbers were a .350 average, four home runs, 32 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. McAdoo, from Ardmore, Okla., graduated with a degree in chemistry.
Garrett Parker was the baseball team's Jim Wade Award nominee this year. From Duncanville, Texas, Parker posted a 12-4 record, 4.42 ERA, and 170 strikeouts in 136.1 innings with the Stars. Parker earned his master's degree in health and human performance from OCU.
Garrett Regan showed himself to be a smooth hitter in his three years with OCU. He hit .391 with 18 homers, 99 RBIs, 15 steals while compiling 191 hits and 53 doubles. Regan, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, graduated with a business degree.
Brad Riddle became OCU's career record holder in appearances with 101, finishing third on the NAIA all-time list in appearances and second in relief appearances with 99. Riddle had an 11-6 record, 3.98 ERA, 17 saves and 138 strikeouts in 151.1 innings pitched with OCU. He became an NAIA scholar-athlete award winner this season. Riddle, from Bethany, Okla., graduated with a history and secondary education degree.
Harold Scheidel was OCU's team of character award winner as a sophomore. Scheidel, from Canton, Conn., made four appearances, logging 2.1 innings and four strikeouts in two years with OCU. He earned his degree in biochemistry.
Steve Vitale became one of the premier hitters in the conference in two years with the Stars. Vitale, from East Meadow, N.Y., hit .389 with 181 hits, 38 doubles, 11 triples, 38 homers, and 142 RBIs at OCU.
Dustin Williams played a key role in the Stars pitching staff these past two years. Williams, from Norman, Okla., went 18-3 with a 4.48 ERA, 189 strikeouts and two saves in 150.2 innings pitched.
The Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft happens June 7-9. OCU has produced 126 professional players, including 55 taken in the draft.
