OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dropped into the losers bracket of the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament after falling 8-0 to Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Friday at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Stars, ranked ninth in the NAIA, earlier beat Northwestern Oklahoma State 4-2 in eight innings. OCU (37-11) plays 1 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the early game at Hall of Fame Stadium.
Third-ranked Lubbock Christian (51-4) loaded the bases three times against OCU, the first time in the third. Lubbock Christian managed only a bases-loaded walk drawn by Latainna Eltsosie.
Lily LaVelle struck out Amanda Myers, then retired Amanda Parsons on a fly ball to left field to end Lubbock Christian's third-inning threat.
Lubbock Christian scored twice after filling the bases in the fourth using Kim Frazier's RBI groundout and Kayla Van Dieren's run-scoring grounder.
In the fifth, Lubbock Christian finished the game after scoring twice on an error, then scoring on Jennifer Frazier's RBI base hit and Kim Frazier's sacrifice fly to right.
Alyssa Gutierrez retired the final seven Stars she faced in getting the win.
Against Northwestern, Jen Davis hammered the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence for a two-run homer to provide the difference for OCU in the top of the eighth inning.
The Stars rallied in the seventh to force extra innings. LaVelle pounded a triple to right-center field to tie the game at 2-2 with two out. Amanda Howard found herself called out at home plate on a squeeze play for the second out.
Northwestern pulled ahead on Natalie Vasquez's RBI single in the sixth.
OCU scored first on Ashley Wilburn's run-scoring base hit to left in the first. Northwestern responded in the bottom of the inning with Katie Thomas' RBI single.
Wilburn finished the game by striking out Vasquez and getting a grounder to third with runners on second and third. Wilburn (14-3) fanned seven in eight innings.
Nathalie Timmermans went 2-for-3, while Wilburn was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Howard was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
