OKLAHOMA CITY – Lily LaVelle fired a no-hitter to lead Oklahoma City University to a doubleheader sweep of Rogers State 4-0, 8-0 on Tuesday evening at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked ninth in NAIA softball, dominated Rogers State in the circle, surrendering just four hits in two shutout victories. OCU finished the regular season 36-10, 31-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and will be the No. 2 seed in this weekend's conference tournament.
LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., pitched seven hitless innings in the first of the twin bill, striking out 10 batters in a dominating performance in the circle. LaVelle (18-3) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning after two RSU batters walked and another reached on a fielder's choice.
The Stars scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings to back LaVelle's pitching effort. Nathalie Timmermans, a sophomore from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the offensive attack. Amanda Howard, a senior from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, recorded two hits with an RBI and two runs scored.
Timmermans doubled to left-center in the first inning to drive in Howard and give the Stars an early 1-0 lead. In the third, LaVelle lined a single up the middle to drive home a run as OCU took a two-run advantage.
Howard brought home a run in the fifth inning with an RBI double off the center field wall, and Timmermans launched a home run to center in the sixth to give OCU a 4-0 lead.
In game two, OCU took control in the third and fourth innings to run-rule Rogers State. LaVelle finished 3-for-3 with three runs, and Howard had two hits and two runs to pace the Stars.
Ashley Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, had a hit and three runs batted in. Wilburn also threw a shutout to improve to 13-3 in the circle for the season. Wilburn gave up four hits and struck out five in five innings of work.
OCU scored three runs in the third inning, capped by a two-RBI single from Jen Davis as the Stars took a 5-0 lead.
OCU added three more runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead. After Howard led off the inning with a triple, Autumn Mayberry lined a single to center to drive home a run. LaVelle followed with a double to left field then Timmermans walked to load the bases. Wilburn and Kelby Roberson each drove in runs on fielder's choice groundouts.
OCU will begin play in the SAC Tournament on Friday at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Game time and opponent has yet to be determined.
