OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University powered its way to 9-1, 7-3 wins over Mid-America Christian on Wednesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked 17th in NAIA softball, pounded seven home runs during the doubleheader. OCU moved to 17-7, 14-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
In the first game, OCU smacked three homers during a seven-run fifth inning. Jen Davis led off the fifth with a solo shot to left field, then Autumn Mayberry nailed a two-run shot over the right-field wall. In between, Lily LaVelle bunted Kelby Roberson home.
After Amanda Howard walked, Nathalie Timmermans homered to left. LeeAnn Lopez finished the game off with an RBI single off the left-field wall with the bases loaded.
Howard also had a squeeze bunt to score LaVelle in the first. Lopez led off the third with a solo shot over the left-field wall.
Lopez, a freshman from Grand Prairie, Texas, and Timmermans, a sophomore from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run. OCU finished with nine hits.
Jenni Gaby, a junior from Gilmer, Texas, notched the win for OCU by keeping Mid-America to one run on six hits in five innings. Gaby (3-1) struck out three.
In the second game, Howard, LaVelle and Lopez each homered. Howard, a senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, had a solo homer in the first.
Lopez' two-run shot to center touched off a three-run second inning. Mayberry, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., added an RBI double in the inning.
LaVelle nailed a homer to start the bottom of the fourth. Mayberry added an RBI single in the fifth.
Mayberry was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Lopez went 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBIs. LaVelle finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and run driven in.
LaVelle earned the victory, going 4.2 innings and striking out five. She allowed one run on four hits and a walk. Ashley Wilburn went the final 2.1 innings with six strikeouts.
The Stars take on Rogers State in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Thursday in Claremore, Okla.
