OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University overwhelmed its foes in women's wrestling duals, winning four duals by a combined score of 182-7 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The two-time defending Women's College Wrestling Association champion Stars improved to 6-0, routing Jamestown (N.D.) 40-1, Missouri Valley 48-1, the Jamestown Orange team 45-5 and the Missouri Valley Orange team 49-0.
OCU recorded its third shutout ever in the program's four years of existence. Before picking up the whitewash of Wayland Baptist (Texas) last week, OCU last had a shutout against Wisconsin-River Falls on Dec. 6, 2008. The Stars have now allowed opponents only one point in a dual five times ever.
Against Missouri Valley, the Stars stuck eight falls. Top-ranked individuals Michaela Hutchison at 55 kilograms, Amberle Mongtomery at 63 and Kristie Davis at 72 pinned their opponents. Nicole Woody at 48, Brittany Goebel at 67, Brittany Delgado at 80 and Karra Stratton at 90 also earned falls for OCU.
OCU's Ashley Hudson also beat Randi Beltz 4-2, 3-1 in the 59-kilo bout. Hudson, a senior from Wildwood, Mo., entered the match ranked fourth at 59, while Beltz held the No. 2 spot in the ratings released Oct. 1.
“The best match of the day was Ashley Hudson,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “It's important. It moves her up in the rankings. It helps her.”
Against Jamestown, the Stars registered three pins and two technical falls. Joey Miller at 51, Montgomery at 63 and Goebel at 67 had the falls. Davis and Delgado had OCU's technical falls.
OCU used eight falls and two forfeits against the Jamestown Orange team.
The Stars had three falls, six forfeits and a technical fall against the Missouri Valley Orange team.
“Teamwise, we're progressing on schedule,” Randall said. “We're wrestling better competition each week and continuing to improve. We're two and three deep at each weight. We were pleased our backup team went undefeated.”
OCU competes next in the Sunkist Open on Oct. 22-24 in Phoenix.
