Stars split with Lubbock Christian

Mindy Crabaugh went 3-for-3 in the first game.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Melissa Moore nailed three home runs on the day, but Oklahoma City University managed a split with Lubbock Christian (Texas), losing 8-6 in the first game before rebounding for a 6-3 win in the second Thursday at PlainsCapital Park.

OCU, ranked second in NAIA softball, went to 28-2, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while sixth-ranked Lubbock Christian moved to 33-4, 8-4.

In the first game, Lubbock Christian built a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Amanda Parsons doubled in a run, and Clarissa Maldonado had an RBI groundout in the sixth to make the difference for Lubbock Christian.

In the third, the Stars cut their deficit to 4-3 on Moore's sacrifice fly and Mindy Crabaugh's run-scoring base hit to left field. Amanda Howard had an RBI single in the fourth, and Lily LaVelle drove in a run with a base hit in the sixth to cut OCU's deficit to 6-5.

Moore led off the second with a homer to left-center and also led off the seventh with her second homer of the game. Moore went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Crabaugh was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Ashley Wilburn was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

In the second game, Howard led off the game by pounding a homer to center, then tripled in the second to drive home two runs.

Moore cranked a homer in the third, and Howard hit a lead-off homer in the seventh. Crabaugh added an RBI groundout in the seventh.

Howard, a junior from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Crabaugh and Moore each were 1-for-4 with a run driven in.

LaVelle, a freshman from Bridge Creek, Okla., fanned five in 5.1 innings and allowed four hits for the win. LaVelle improved to 13-1. Wilburn worked the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit for her second save of the year.

The Stars face Oklahoma Baptist in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
