OCU nails 10 homers in 18-11 win over Northwood

Brandon Moss went deep in the fifth inning Friday.

CEDAR HILL, Texas – Oklahoma City University socked 10 home runs in an 18-11 season-opening victory over Northwood (Texas) on Friday.

Steve Vitale and Brent Weaver each pounded two homers for the Stars, who finished third in last year's NAIA World Series. Vitale, a junior from East Meadow, N.Y., went 5-for-5, scored four times, drove in four runs and swatted a double and a triple.

Weaver, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., went 2-for-6 with five RBIs. Kirk Walker, a sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif., was 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Walker, Landon Camp, Sammy Lee, David Mann, Brandon Moss and B.J. Wheeler each went yard for OCU. Lee, a senior from Ninnekah, Okla., went 2-for-4, scored four times and drove in two runs. OCU registered 19 hits.

Ashur Tolliver, a junior left-hander from Sherwood, Ark., picked up the win, striking out nine in six innings. Dustin Williams, a junior righty from Norman, Okla., worked the final three innings of the game to earn a save.

The Stars exploded for five runs in the third inning. Walker led off the inning with a homer. Vitale nailed a two-run triple, then scored when Weaver pounded a two-run homer.

Camp stands 12 homers shy of breaking OCU's career home-run record. Dave Marlett holds the current record with 55 homers for OCU from 2001-04.

OCU faces Northwood (Texas) in a noon doubleheader Saturday in Cedar Hill, Texas.
