OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University crushed Mid-America Christian 25-8, 25-15, 25-19 before a season-high 700 fans Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena on volleyball senior night.
Alex Benbrook, a sophomore from Enid, Okla., topped OCU with 10 kills and three blocks. The Stars improved to 18-18, 9-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU honored its three seniors, who were the first group of seniors under coach Jen Gomez to play all four years for the Stars. OCU revived its volleyball program in 2006.
Lucy Knight, a senior from Norman, Okla., matched her career high with 12 digs Thursday. Lindsay Hansen, a senior from Moore, Okla., notched seven kills and a solo block. Hansen was OCU's first in-state recruit under Gomez.
Brittany Segars, a senior from Keller, Texas, added eight digs and two aces. Segars became the first recruit to sign with OCU since the program restarted.
“I'm so proud of the accomplishments of our seniors,” Gomez said. “I'm glad they took the chance and the opportunity to help us build our program.”
Shelbey Veselka picked up nine digs and two aces, and Samantha Ball recorded 32 assists and two aces. Vicky Murphy chipped in seven kills for the Stars.
OCU finished the first set with the final 12 points of the frame. Murphy sparked that run with two kills, and Veselka served that entire stretch and set down two aces.
In the second set, the Stars built an 18-9 lead with a 7-0 run. Benbrook had three kills during that run. OCU hit a blistering .696 during that set and .341 overall during the match.
OCU ended the match with an 8-2 run, erasing a 17-17 tie. Adrienne Tillery had two kills and teamed with Ball on the match-clinching block.
The Stars conclude the regular season at 7 p.m. Monday against Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla.
