BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University's season came to an end in a 3-1 loss at Southern Nazarene in the championship game of the Sooner Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament on Friday night at Harmon Field.
The Stars finished the season with an 11-7-1 record.
OCU fell behind early when Jackie Acevedo of Southern Nazarene scored in the 24th minute to make the score 1-0.
SNU added a goal in the 34th minute by Stephanie Royse for a 2-0 lead at the break.
Rachel Eguren of Southern Nazarene scored in the 57th minute to extend the lead to 3-0 early in the second half.
The Stars finally got on the board in the 90th minute when Josefine Holmgren netted a goal off a free kick with 33 seconds to play.
OCU outshot SNU 15-7 in the second half, but could only manage one goal.
The Stars held a 20-17 shots advantage for the game.
Sarah Leonard led the Stars with six shots in the game, including five that were on goal.
Leonard, Malin Andersson and Brenna Skillern were selected to the all-tournament team.
This was the final game for the senior class of Leonard, Sarah Burnett and Jamie McGinnis.
Leonard, from West Yorkshire, England, finished the season with team-high 22 goals. She ranks third in school history with 52 career goals. Leonard was voted second-team all-conference in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2007, she was also an honorable mention all-American and first-team all-NAIA Region VI. Leonard will be graduating with a degree in kinesiology.
Burnett, from Norman, Okla., played three seasons for the Stars. She scored six goals and dished out three assists in her OCU career. This year, she was selected as a second-team COSIDA academic all-district. Burnett will be graduating with a degree in biology.
McGinnis, from Broken Arrow, Okla., played four seasons with the Stars. She scored one goal in her OCU career. McGinnis will be graduating with a degree in music business.
